It was one of the most eagerly awaited comebacks in recent UFC history. After more than five years away, Conor McGregor finally returned to the Octagon this weekend at UFC 329 against Max Holloway. But the evening ended in disappointment for millions of fans around the world.

In the very first seconds, the former Irish champion tried to impose his explosive style with a spectacular jumping kick. On landing, his leg gave way. McGregor was unable to continue, and the referee stopped the fight after just 69 seconds — a TKO win for Max Holloway. Initial examinations suggest a serious knee injury, possibly a torn cruciate ligament.

On social media, excitement quickly gave way to disappointment. Many fans who had waited years for this comeback regret not having seen a real fight. Some speak of a “botched comeback”, while others wonder what lies ahead for the man who was long the UFC's biggest star.

However, neither Dana White nor the fighter's camp mentions any prior injury. According to his coach John Kavanagh, McGregor was in top shape before the fight and nothing suggested such a scenario.

Visibly affected, the Irishman insisted after the fight that he is not thinking about retirement. Despite this setback, he wants to return to the Octagon as soon as his health allows.

One thing is certain: this comeback, billed as one of the biggest MMA events of the year, leaves combat sports fans with a bitter taste. Expectations were huge, but the show lasted little more than a minute. A real flop for fans who wanted to see “The Notorious” back at his best.
