11 SEPTEMBER — AMERICA COMMEMORATES 25 YEARS SINCE THE ATTACKS
New York, 11 September 2026.

Remember… 25 years on, the United States honours the victims
New York, 11 September 2026. Twenty-five years after the attacks of 11 September 2001, the United States today commemorates one of the most defining days in its recent history.
In New York, the families of the victims have gathered at the 9/11 Memorial for the 25th anniversary ceremony. The names of those killed in the attacks of 11 September 2001 and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are read aloud by their loved ones. Several moments of silence punctuate the ceremony in memory of the victims.
Almost 3,000 people died on 11 September 2001, when four planes hijacked by members of al-Qaeda were used to attack the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon, while a fourth aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania.
A day of remembrance
In New York, commemorations continue throughout the day. The memorial recalls the names of the victims, while tributes are held across the country.
At nightfall, the two beams of light of the “Tribute in Light” are once again to illuminate the sky over Manhattan, symbolising the former Twin Towers and honouring those who died.
This year has a special significance: 25 years after the attacks, a new generation is too young to have lived through that day. The 9/11 Memorial therefore stresses how important it is to pass on this memory and its history.
From New York to Washington: America remembers
Ceremonies are also being held at the Pentagon, where 184 people were killed, and in Pennsylvania, at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93. Tributes are being organised across the country.
Twenty-five years on, the images of 11 September remain deeply etched in collective memory.
Today, America remembers. And the world does not forget.
